Caveman medicine: Clay and Charcoal are the essentials

Ever wonder what the caveman doctors prescribed to their patients? Me neither but I think it is a great question to ask.

From NatureHacker blog

Obviously herbs, for better or worse, played a big part. I think a lot of the shaman's of old were focused on drug-like plant effects rather than optimal health and longevity (hey we haven't changed!). However I think there were some real doctors out there, not just drug pushers in the ancient days.

So what would any real doctor use as medicine if they had nothing other than a water vessel (if they were lucky maybe it could be heated without breaking), dirt, water, fire, and wood? That would be the ultimate bug-out survival question.

Well I am here to tell you that not only could you make medicine from just those 4 ingredients, but that that can get you all the medicine you could ever need and is the most important thing anyone could take ever regardless of technology or wealth. So like you could guess from the title, clay and charcoal is what we are going for here.

Why are clay and charcoal important? Well to answer that we need to know what is the most pressing need in human health. Gut health. In my book I talk about this but gut hygiene if done properly will prevent all system wide sickness. Contagious virus, water and food borne sickness, even certain nutrient deficiencies can be prevented by gut hygiene. For more info on that please see my book or leave a comment. Clay and charcoal can also be used to prevent cut infections and stop bleeding.

So how does clay and charcoal fit the gut hygiene bill? Well clay is hydrophilic and is a desiccant. As it moves through the digestive tract, especially the large intestine it dries out bad bacteria and kills them. It also contains saponins that will reduce the numbers of other types of bacteria keeping you clean. Charcoal, in addition to containing lots of calcium and other trace minerals if it isn't activated, will bind gut toxins and shuttle them out of the body. This was a match made in heaven and every true doctor throughout the ages will have employed them. Even Jesus healed people with clay.

How do we make them? Well clay is a special part of all dirt. To make it put some dirt in water and stir it. Let it settle for a couple minutes then pour the liquid into another container. The new dirty water is actually clay water. Let this settle/dry/boil it off and you have clay powder. If you boiled it then it is clean enough to drink. Make sure you get a clean source of dirt to start with. All the big sandy dirty particles will have settled to the bottom of the first container and are discarded.

For charcoal simply burn wood and when it is thoroughly turned into coals douse with water or cover to starve it of oxygen. Then let it cool obviously and grind it into a powder to have charcoal powder that can be mixed 50/50 with the clay powder made previously and taken internally. Not only does this provide the intestinal cleansing benefits mentioned previously but also provides an excellent assortment of vital minerals.

There you have it and that is how to stay healthy in the wild no matter what mother nature throws at you.
